I was looking through the special supplemental manual that is bundled with the regular one that explains the ST’s special features, and I found this table. This wonderful, hilarious table. For the three of you in Oppo that don’t drive a FoST for some reason (you weirdos), if you are driving smoothly and not just dumping the clutch, you probably haven’t finished letting the clutch out in 1st at 12 mph and you’re in danger of stalling out at 32 mph in 4th. But we can all appreciate how they clearly wish they could say “just ignore 5th altogether”.

I am confident that it is impossible for a human being from the planet earth to drive a Focus ST like this. Or a machine for that matter. The math doesn’t work out.

Dat 5th gear pull.

Also, in my Golf, I often just shift 2nd - 3rd/4th - 6th around town.

Why manuals will be driven out by regulation not consumer choice in one chart.

To be fair, I’d be in a FiST if my head didn’t touch the cieling. Stupid over-tall torso.

Seriously, though, for a while last year Oppo was practically an ST owners club.

I get 19MPG in my Taurus SHO. How do people get such bad mileage in an ST?

In my FoST I shift at 3500ish for casual driving, and 5o00 for spirited driving. Anything more than that and I’m probably already breaking the law by 30-40 mph.

If you drive real gently, you could do this, minus 5th gear (so pointless here).

When I’m putzin around slowly in a 25 through at least 1 stop (a 3 mile stretch of my daily commute), I’m off the clutch in 1st at 5, take it to 25 and go 1st to 4th, just because I can. Makes me feel like I’m driving a vette ;)

And that’s in an FR-S. 25 in 4th, I’m real close to idle speed.

Just cruising from place to place that chart isn’t that crazy really.

LOL @ shift into 5th at 41, into 6th @ 42. I used to go 3/4 to 6 a lot in my wife’s 6 speed Volvo. 5th is kinda useless if you don’t live in an area with a lot of 50mph flat roads. And if you do, you could still probably just go for 6th because you’re going 60-65 anyway if you’re in an area like that.

My 3-speed Ford F100 would probably look like this:

1-2: 10mph

2-3: 25mph

That’s it. You can comfortably go 25 on a flat in 3rd, and that’s all you’ve got right up to highway speeds. You just don’t shift a lot driving a 3 speed with a V8.

I’m sure you technically can drive it economically, if you enjoy living in a town that has outlawed dancing, but you wouldn’t be driving an ST if you did.

Power corrupts, and the power generated by a beefed-up version of the beefiest engine offered in the Escape corrupts absoultely. Seriously, it’s a car that makes you misbehave. That’s why it rules.

That’s what I usually do. But seriously, you’re still idling at 12mph in 1st.

Yeah, I work at a manufacturing facility, and in-plant speed limits are 10 mph. The car stalls in 1st at around 8 mph if I don’t ride the clutch, and I’m not wearing my clutch down for that, so I’m typically the only one going down the roads at 15+.

Oh, also, what elevation are you at? I shift as described above, and yet my 18k mile combined average mpg is still 25.2. Probably 75/25 city/highway.

This is my problem with the S6.... I can never get better than 15mpg... I never rev pass 4.5k, but clearly that’s not early enough. I also only drive locally.
